Update on Little Bitty

It's been crazy-busy lately but thought I'd share a couple of updates on Little Bitty. The other day, I asked him how his day at school was, expecting to hear the answer he always gives, "koo bus" (school bus) . It doesn't matter how we ask the question:

"How was school today?"
"Did you have a good day at school?"
"Did you have fun at school?"
"What did you do at school today?"

The answer is always the same: "Koo bus"

He says it with a smile so we have generally taken this to mean he had a good day at school. (Ironically, he doesn't even ride the bus, he's always been a car-rider).

So when I asked him the other day, I was surprised when he gave a new answer:
"Ms. J---" (his teacher's name)
"Wow, you saw Ms. J--- today?"
"Ms. A---" (his speech therapist's name)
"You saw Ms. A--- today too? Did you have fun with Ms. A---?"
He smiled and went back to playing with his trains. Dh and I were pretty amazed :).

-----------------

Not so much progress on the potty-training front though. We're still pretty much at the same place we were a couple of months ago. Well, actually we have had a little progress in that he will sometimes tell us "po-ee tie" when we're out in public now, and if we can get to a bathroom in time he'll use the potty. He's done this at church a couple of times. Unfortunately, he won't go unless his pants are completely off, so it takes a little time getting his shoes and everything off. One time I wasn't fast enough to get everything off and get back to help him aim (he doesn't do that by himself yet), and he got me. Luckily I had a black skirt on and you couldn't tell, and church was almost over at that point. It's not an issue at home obviously, since he is a minimalist when it comes to clothes at home.

He still shows absolutely no interest in doing #2 in the potty. None whatsoever, no matter how much we encourage and cajole. On the bright side, he still asks for a pull-up when he needs to do #2. That means (1) he recognizes the need to go before it happens, and can tell the difference b/t needing to go #1 and #2, and (2) he doesn't want to go in his underwear. That's pretty huge as far as I'm concerned. Two other boys who will remain nameless had no qualms about doing #2 in their underwear when they were potty-training. In fact, they would go hide somewhere to do their business in their pants, and then come walking around like nothing had happened. The clean-up was NO FUN.

So I'm extremely grateful that Bitty gives us some warning and prefers to use a pull-up for that, because it's easier to clean him up. Sometimes he even tries to clean himself up, but that generally leads to a bigger mess, and often even a quick bath. Which he hates :(.

As for trying to get to the next step, when he asks for a pull-up, we try to get him to sit on the potty (sometimes we put him there), and tell him it's potty-time.

His response: "No po-ee tie, pooyuh" (no potty time, pull-up)

He gets really agitated if we push it, and we don't want this to become a battle of wills or risk making it a bigger issue than it needs to be, so don't push too hard. He'll get there when he's ready.

Yay on the speech!! How awesome to get those little tiny peeks into his day!

Training for #1 and #2 were completed almost a year apart for us. I gave up on #2 for a while. It's a sensory issue for our little guys. My autism specialist said they're so used to feeling "it" pressed into their skin (totally gross, I know, sorry), that it scares them to feel it fall away. Don't know if that's true, since we can't get in their heads, but it certainly explained the desire for Pull Ups even though he wanted them changed immediately.

Good luck, and hang in there!

How great that he likes school and is starting to tell you about it. And good progress on the potty training - awareness of needing to go and being able to hold it until the pull up is ready is great!

Wow, it sounds like he's really doing great! That's awesome.
And the potty training steps are huge - -sounds like he's right on the edge, congrats...

Sounds like some great progress is happening. If it makes you feel any better, my son (who is 5!!!) is still having major difficulties with going poop on the toilet. He almost always hides and goes in his underwear. The best progress we have made so far is that he has lately been getting on the toilet almost immediately after going in his pants. I wonder if it will ever happen????

I think it's awesome that he's telling you he needs to go. Daniel still won't do that and will usually say "no" when asked if he ask to go. The only exception is after he's gone to bed. Then he can nicely tell me, "Mom, I have to go potty". Sigh. All I can do is wish you good luck! At this point he'll go #1 by himself 95% of the time. Sometimes we need to remind him to run to the potty. If he's busy he'll try to hold it too long. For #2, sometimes he's successful and other times he's not. It's frustrating. I cleaned 2 pairs of underwear yesterday...you're right. It's not fun! Um...I agree is A_G. lol!!! And let me add my own good luck wishes. :)

That is so exciting about his sharing of the day. How frustrating on the pull-up, though. I wish I had advice, but can only give you my support.

We doing preliminary potty training here, too. Peanut's not really telling us yet, but if we put her on the potty in the a.m. and other appropriate times during the day she goes. This morning she even told me she wasn't done yet! Yeah! She's also finished pooping in the potty after she started, so at least when we really get it figured out we won't be dealing with that. (I hope.)

Just tonight I had one of those incidents where the kid decided to try and clean herself up... what a mess! Little Bitty is really making some nice progress!

This all sounds SO familiar. Potty training isn't going great here either. Meechi reacts the same way if we try to push the idea, and I don't want to set him back further by making it seem like it's punishment or something.
When I ask him about school I almost always get the answer "wall-e book". I don't know if he reads a wall-e book at school everyday, or if it is just something he is saying.

Just wondering if you do diaper changes in standing?

Several reasons I think this subtle change gives subtle effects.

If you are not, consider trying. Barbara

Wow--that's so cool he is aware and asks for the pull-up. Great progress!
