Social story: Airplane ride

UPDATE:
The .ppt file has been uploaded to google docs, you can view and download it here:
Airplane Ride Social Story

I made this for the boys before our trip, thought it might be helpful to share.

New experiences, however fun or exciting, can be really stressful for Cuddlebug and Bearhug so the goal of this was to walk through what to expect step-by-step. With flying, I knew there would be a lot of steps involved and wanted to help them transition as smoothly as possible from one area to the next as we went through the process of getting checked in, going through security, finding our gate, waiting, boarding, etc. The fewer surprises the better :).

I put the pages together in powerpoint and then printed them out with each slide taking up half a page. Then I cut the pages and stapled the edges to make little booklets. They didn't actually spend a whole lot of time looking at the booklets but having thought through all the steps helped me to be prepared to talk them through everything as we moved from one step to the next.

If anyone wants the .ppt file so you can adapt it for your own family just send me a note or leave a comment, I'd be happy to share it.

I've heard lots about social stories, but never actually seen one. This is great! I bet others could definitely benefit from it. Good job, Mama!

Awesome job!!! Did you check things off as you went along so it wasn't quite as long and overwhelming at first glance?

This is awesome and you thought of so many extra things that I would have forgotten about if I were to make one of these! We're not planning on going anywhere anytime soon, but I saved this in case I ever need it. =)

This is a great social story for airplane prep for ALL kids! I really appreciate it. Some of our trip will vary and I would love to be able to edit to meet my needs in traveling with my granddaughters but I am not sure I have much time to change it around for now. I will use yours and adapt for later and offer this for parents of my clients....You are so cool to have shared this. Thank you. Susan B. Nachimson, SLP sbnslp@gmail.com

Great social story for children for flying! I sent a comment but not sure it was sent. I would appreciate a copy that I can adapt for my particulars. I will share this with colleagues and families of my clients who would benefit. This is great for ALL children not just those with special needs..Thank you so much.
