June, in pictures

Comments

Aside from Cuddlebug and Bearhug's birthday, here's a recap of what we did in June.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dh and I celebrated our 19th anniversary last month. We took the whole family out to dinner to celebrate, here are my four handsome dates for the evening :).
Bitty is very particular about his drink and insisted on a big cup like the rest of us had, so the waitress brought one out clearly labelled for him :).
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Bearhug and Cuddlebug defended the house against zombies with super-soakers, lol. Bitty wanted to join in, so they "volunteered" him to play the part of zombie. He didn't care though and didn't really try to play the part, he was just happy to be outside playing with his brothers :).

After the zombie-hunt, Bitty put his watergun to use watering the plants :).

~~~~~~~~~~~~
I took Cuddlebug and Bearhug on a trip to visit family. I'll have a separate post on that but here's a preview.
In the airport:
Swimming
It was brutally hot... although to be fair this was taken right after we started up the truck and it cooled down after that. If by "cooled down" you mean, all the way to a chilly 110°.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

The lazy cat was, well, lazy. Every day. He loves this window cat bed we got for him, which gives him a great view of the birdfeeders outside.

May, in pictures

Comments

Catching up, wanted to share some of what we did in May (separate post coming soon for June).

Little Bitty's class participated in Special Olympics soccer. I was able to take time off from work to go cheer him on with dh :).

I'm glad my big guys aren't too big for this yet :). They've been doing this for years... their typical way to pass the time while we are at the checkout :).

Bitty lost his first tooth. He kept trying to put it back in until I finally put it in an envelope, out of sight, to go under his pillow. He seemed a little weirded out that a mysterious fairy would be willing to give him money in exchange for his tooth. What does she do with all those teeth? Still, he tried to stay awake so he could see her and whenever I told him to go to sleep he answered, "I AM sleeping!" lol

Cuddlebug's science fair project, in which he and Bearhug were the test subjects. He measured their heart rate after various intervals of playing different types of video games, to see (1) whether video games raise your heart rate, and (2) whether different types of games have a different impact on heart rate. Or more specifically, does playing a zombie-attack game raise your heart more than, say, playing an adventure or puzzle game? Hint, the answers were (1) yes and (2) yes and he had the charts to prove it :).

These two have been at each other's throats more and more lately, so when there was a peaceful moment of video game mentoring going on, I had to snap a picture. You know, in case it didn't happen again for a while...

Never too big for a kiddie pool (also, nothing encourages brothers to put their differences aside than a little water fun!)

4th of July trip

Comments
We took a short road trip over the 4th of July weekend to visit family at dh's aunt and uncle's ranch.

Little Bitty wanted to help feed the horses :). He fed them pieces of apples.

Then he put himself to work carrying hay and following Aunt J.

True to Bitty-form though, he didn't follow Aunt J.'s lead in gently giving the hay to the horses, but rather tossed it high into the air and over the fence.

Dude... I think the horse is sticking his tongue out at me! LOL

Cuddlebug, deep in thought

The boys had a great time in the pile of sawdust (quite the sensory activity!)...

... mostly seeing how far they could dig down

they also tried to do "sawdust angels" :)

Swimming at the hotel pool:

Bearhug (gotta love that expression!)

Mr. Bitty (love the swim goggles) :)

...trying out his underwater moves :)

Swim party

Comments
Photos from the end of summer Cub Scout swim party.

Bearhug and Cuddlebug *loved* the waterslide.

Little Bitty mostly stayed by the steps...

...he got brave toward the end and started jumping (onto the top step, that is) :)

Summer homeschool

Comments
We've given the boys a few days off to relax and enjoy the start of their summer, but soon it will be time to start up our summer homeschooling activities.

It's something we've done since Cuddlebug and Bearhug were in preschool. It helps maintain structure during the summer, and also helps keep them on track academically. We can expose them to topics in the summer that we know they'll be working on in the next grade. Then it's at least somewhat familiar when they come to it again in school, which helps their confidence and offsets some of the impact of needing to take sensory breaks and such during the school day. It's also a chance to teach them things that the school curriculum may not cover, or may touch on but not go in depth (such as history or science topics).

We're taking a more relaxed approach this summer since they only have a little over two months before school starts back in early August. They work so hard during the school year, we want them to be able to enjoy some free time while they have the chance. :)

Topics for this summer for Cuddlebug and Bearhug include:
* Reading - reading comprehension, with a range of fiction and non-fiction
* History - Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence
* Math - more advanced practice with fractions, division, etc.
* Writing - they are full of ideas, but we will work on organizing their writing
* Science - TBD

They like to read so that part should be easy :). I'll be helping with the writing part, because although dh is a gifted teacher, writing is not his thing. I'll try to help with the rest as I can, but realistically it will mostly be dh as he's the one home during the day.

For Bitty, we still have a lot of the Kindergarten workbooks and materials from a few years ago that he can use. Our main focus will be to work on his hand strength and fine motor control for writing and drawing, as well as basic math concepts. He reads all the time so there's no need to set aside "school" time for that :).

I'll keep you posted on how it goes...

Summer, we hardly knew ye...

1 comments
Wow, this summer seems to have flown by, it's hard to believe that it's coming to an end. School starts next week!

Today was school registration / open house for all three boys. Turns out Bitty's new teacher was also one of Bearhug's teachers when he was in Pre-K :), and one of her parapros worked with Cuddlebug's class when he was there. I know they and the other parapro who we met today will do great with Bitty! We found out that at least a couple of the boys from his class last year will be in his class this year, so it will be good for him to have some familiar faces in class.

Bitty has really been freaking out about school starting. Every time we mention it, he gets upset, and last night when we tried to prep him for the fact that we'd be meeting his teacher today he went ballistic and had a meltdown for about an hour. He always does fine once he's there though. We had to bribe him with an Oreo to get him in the door, but once he started to see familiar people (he's been going there for over a year so pretty much everyone knows him) and places (his classroom is in the same hallway as his class last year), he started to relax and even seemed excited about being back.

That being said, I know we're in for a rough couple of weeks (at least) while he re-adjusts to the new schedule, especially in the morning. We'll be stocking up on Oreos and Pop-tarts to help ;).

We visited Cuddlebug & Bearhug's school also and met their new teachers. They too seem very nice and I think they are each a good fit for the boys. We had to laugh because we noticed that each of their desks (they are in separate classes) are right next to the teacher's desks, LOL. Coincidence? Perhaps... you decide ;). They have the same resource teacher that they've had since 1st grade, and she is awesome!

Bearhug has been getting increasingly anxious as the first day of school approaches (it starts next week), but this happens every year both at the beginning and end of the school year so we're working through it as best we can. Cuddlebug seems pretty calm about the start of school, I think he is more looking forward to it. They both found out that some of the children they know from prior years will be in their classes this year, so that familiarity helps.

We also found out that they'll both be doing some gifted pull-out this year, so it will be exciting to see what kind of activities they'll be doing with that. Third grade will bring a lot of new challenges and it's going to be a lot of work but I know they'll do great!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This school year, we're planning to enroll Bearhug and Cuddlebug in Cub Scouts. The scouts had and end-of-summer pool party and invited the new, incoming scouts to come also, so we went to that earlier this week. The boys had a great time - they absolutely love to go swimming! Especially Bearhug, he has always been my little "fish." They don't know how to swim yet, so they stayed in the shallow end, but Bearhug had fun jumping in and I think they might be getting ready for dh to teach them to swim. He's tried before (he has experience teaching swimming, including teaching swimming to children with special needs, from his college days) but so far the boys have been very resistant so we've just been waiting until they are ready. We don't get to go swimming that often so we haven't had that many opportunities to practice anyway.
Unfortunately dh wasn't at the pool party, he stayed home with Bitty (because he had a sunburn from doing yardwork the other day), and I didn't bring a swimsuit to get in the water. Not that I'd be a good swim teacher, I can swim but I basically taught myself so my technique is pretty much whatever it takes to keep from sinking, not really good swimming skills (lol).
Here are some pictures (Cuddlebug in red, Bearhug in blue):
